Goals But Matched Each Other In Ambition Yet Ten Years Later They Can T Help Wondering What Happened To The Hopeful, Confident, Driven Women They Used To Be And How To Get Them Back Radio Personality Are They Worth The Price They Ll Pay To Achieve Them This will be a 3 star rating for me Im perfectly Happy tells the story of four college friends who at what would be the prime happy times of their lives realize that they aren t.Raina, Kara, Nikki and Sienna all seem to have what society says you should have when you re a certain age A man, A career, Kids, A home and financially good meaning you should be sitting on savings but as we see in our current situations, many people even the ones that say the always did don t have said saving This will be a 3 star rating for me Im perfectly Happy tells the story of four college friends who at what would be the prime happy times of their lives realize that they aren t.Raina, Kara, Nikki and Sienna all seem to have what society says you should have when you re a certain age A man, A career, Kids, A home and financially good meaning you should be sitting on savings but as we see in our current situations, many people even the ones that say the always did don t have said savings Anyways, these ladies thought the lives they were living was good and it is but what about that pact they made in college The one where they said they would keep each other accountable for the dreams and goals they wanted to achieve And for the most part they have or did but life interrupts and sometimes you have to walk a different path Our lady friends realize that maybe taking that left instead the right wasn t what they planned and they decide to keep each other accountable again but going down the right road is bumpy and unsure.Let me start off saying that I loved the complexities of the friendship between the women in this story I enjoyed the fact that the author wrote their relationship as sometimes complicated Everything isn t rainbow and sunshine Even with you good girlfriends so it was good to see ladies in Im Perfectly Happy were the kind of friends that would be good with each other one day and maybe not so much the next But they were always on their grown woman enough to call each other out on each other s AND their own bullshit. Now, the plot or makings of this story was what would be for me is the typical meat and bones of women s fiction Four women whom for all intents and purposes should be happy but they for whatever reasons aren t, realize they aren t and are then tasked with figuring out how to get to towards their set goals while navigating the obstacles in life the author gives them What works in Im Perfectly Happy is that each character is just that imperfect messy and downright human For me, all four of these women are women that I knew or know Shit, if I m being honest these four women are me We sacrifice so much of ourselves for men, for our families, for our friends for fucking life and we forget about US We forget about what we want what makes us happy We are always settling because society tells us that settling is expected, it is what we are supposed to be happy about The ladies in this story while battling addiction, cheating men, generational curses, and so so muchwhile working healing through and getting through to achieve the lives they were meant to live.So I gave ya ll all that up there and you re probably wondering or not why only 3 stars Even though there was so much to love about Im Perfectly Happy, I do feel that there were some forced conversation, issues that I also feel like folks think Black people want to see talked about in books And for the most part we do BUT for me, I want to see the issues done in atrue free flowing way Not some forced thing that publishers are shoving downwards I m not going to go all in because I don t want to take away from the much needed healing this book offers its readers Sooo, job well done Ms Sharina Harris I look forward to readingof your work.I say read it and add it to your physical library Set in Atlanta and focused on four women who ve been friends since university, Harris has created a story that displays the best qualities of friendship and support, even when we aren t being our best selves in every situation Four women with vastly different views on how the world should work for them, and goals that may have seemed unobtainable after choices dampened some of the resolve and options wide open some ten years earlier, there is something for everyone to relate to here From dr Set in Atlanta and situation Four women with vastly different views on how the world should work for them, and goals that may have seemed unobtainable after choices dampened some of the resolve and options wide open some ten years earlier, there is something for everyone to relate to here From dreams passed over in favor of another choice, to fear of moving forward, grief, infidelities, relationship struggles and truly finding their lost mojo that was forefront and loud when leaving school, we see each character go through struggles, changes, challenges and self examination from learning to deal with grief, to finding your own purpose, even things as simple as redefining a marriage or finding a new job that doesn t wear on a daily basis Stay at home mum and frustrated singer Nikki, Radio Host Raina, grief stricken Kara and lawyer Sienna all have challenges and choices thrown in their path the beauty of this story is the way in which they tackle those choices and challenges, and find strength, course corrections and camaraderie within the friend group The voices and the characters are compelling and universal the beauty of diversity in fiction highlights BOTH the differences and similarities, and allows readers to vicariously experience a situation or circumstance that may be similar to their own, or very different but compelling in the way the character attacks the problem Harris has cracked a window into a secret that many readers just instinctively know and that everyone should experience We arealike than different, it s simply the circumstances and appearances that make us different And, despite those differences, we can all learn from one another, as we are developing a new view of the world and people around us I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via interest I had to force myself to finish it The book follows four friends who are in their 30 s and who all, for different reasons, have stopped pursuing their dreams They make a promise to one another to start pursuing their passions again and agree to hold each other accountable The book is broken up into 5 months and each friend gets her own dedicated chapter for every month In these chapters we are given snapshots of what was going on in the characters lives at the time The way the book was written prevented the reader from fully learning who each of the characters were and the little snapshots we were given made some of them completely unlikable to me And of course by the end everything was wrapped up in a perfect bow for each of them The message of the book was about finding happiness In my opinion it s easy to be happy when everything you want turns out perfectly for you in the end and in some cases even better than they originally dreamed It would have been nice to see them find happiness even if everything didn t turn out exactly the way they wanted Romance Friend supporting friends Dreams, struggles This book has everything for a modern story of love. I liked the premise but felt the journey was sometimes a bit doubtful The characters were a bit one dimensional I kept reading because I was fascinated with the plot but there was too much going on without any depth A lot of telling vs showing in the writing style.
